Reptiles On Display At DuPage County Fair

WHEATON, Ill. (CBS) -- The DuPage County Fair is up and running, and for the first time this year, you'll find a display of reptiles.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Mike Krauser reports, the Cindy Sinjenovich's veiled chameleons wouldn't much care for the fried dough, cotton candy and other carnival food at the fair.

"Mainstay is crickets; they also eat super worms, roaches, silk worms, reptile worms, horn worms," she said.

Sinjenovich is showing off her chameleons in Building One at the fair, reptile central.

One of the chameleons, named Louie, is described by his owner as "about 4 years old, and he's a pretty good guy."

But he also looks like he's just come from a Grateful Dead concert, with a tie-dyed appearance. His eyes also move independently.

The reptiles are new this year, part of a 4-H style competition, run by Scott Smith, of Scott Smith's All Animal Expo.

Snakes, tortoises and lizards are among the reptiles on display. You'll also find some amphibians, the form of marine toads, and even some invertebrates that might make a tasty treat for some of the reptiles – there are spiders too.

The DuPage County Fair runs through Sunday at the county fairgrounds at 2015 Manchester Rd. in Wheaton.
