White Sox Trade Gordon Beckham To Angels
(CBS) The White Sox have traded second baseman Gordon Beckham to the Angels for a player to be named later or cash, they announced Thursday afternoon.
The 27-year-old Beckham has struggled all season long offensively, hitting .221 with seven homers, 36 RBIs and a paltry .598 OPS in 101 games. He's a career .244 hitter and has spent all six years of his big league career in Chicago. Beckham entered the White Sox organization with high expectations, having been the eighth overall pick in the 2008 amateur draft.
The trade also opens up room for the White Sox to take longer looks at some of their prospects. Marcus Semien and Carlos Sanchez are two players at Triple-A Charlotte who could get called up and be evaluated with consistent at-bats in September, and elite prospect Micah Johnson projects as the second baseman of the future, though he's out the rest of this season with a hamstring injury.
The White Sox will make a corresponding roster move before tomorrow night's game against the Yankees in New York.
