Woman, ex-husband dead in apparent murder-suicide in Geneva
GENEVA, Ill. (CBS) -- Police in west suburban Geneva are investigating, after a man apparently killed his ex-wife before taking his own life Wednesday evening.
Police received a call around 5:20 p.m. from 49-year-old Chad Dockery, of Hinsdale, who claimed he had killed his ex-wife, 48-year-old Amanda Dockery, inside her home in the 1000 block of Pebble Beach Court, at the end of a cul-de-sac off Keim Circle, according to Geneva Police Deputy Matthew Dean.
Chad Dockery told police he was armed with a pistol, and when the first officer arrived at the scene, Chad was seen inside a car at the end of the driveway. As the officer approached, a shot was fired, and Chad was found inside the car with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers went inside the home, where they found Amanda, who had been shot twice. Amanda and Chad were taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where Amanda was pronounced dead at 6:06 p.m., and Chad was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m., police said.
A 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene, police said.
No one else was inside the home at the time, and no one else was injured.
"There is no risk to the public. The incident was confined to that scene and the end of the cul-de-sac here," Geneva Police Chief Eric Passarelli said. "You know, it's tragic. Our hearts go out the families and everyone impacted in this community. As we've said, it really - it shakes the whole community."
Neighbors on Pebble Beach Court came home were shocked to see police on their quiet block.
"I just heard the helicopters – didn't know what it was. My neighbor came over, knocked on my door, and said, 'Mike, come outside – take a look,'" said neighbor Michael Sloan. "I come out, there's 25, 30 police cars up down the street,"
Thursday morning, police said the murder-suicide remained under investigation. Autopsies on both Amanda and Chad were pending at the Kane County Coroner's office.
The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force was assisting Geneva Police with the investigation.
