Reports: Cubs, Yankees Discussing Soriano Trade
(CBS) Just a day after dealing Matt Garza to the Rangers, it appears the Cubs have turned their attention to another big piece they would like to flip for prospects.
According to CBSSports.com baseball reporter and 670 The Score contributor Jon Heyman, the Yankees are interested in Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano. Late Monday night, Heyman reported that the Yankees were "moving closer" to acquiring Soriano, but he added early Tuesday morning that "there's work to do" to get the deal done.
Soriano would have to waive his no-trade clause to return to the place where he started his career. The outfielder played parts of five seasons with the Yankees from 1999-2003 and set career-highs in hits (209), runs (128) and stolen bases (41) in 2002 while also hitting 39 home runs.
Last season, Soriano rejected a deal to the San Francisco Giants, who went on to win the World Series without him.
Money owed will play a key role in any deal involving Soriano. He is stilled owed $25 million through 2014 and FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports the Cubs are willing to pay a big portion of that money, but want "a solid prospect" in return.
