Report: State Spent $121 Million On Employee Cars In 1 Year
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- As the state struggles to pay its bills, it spent $121 million on government-issued cars for employees in 2010.
As WBBM Newsradio's Nancy Harty reports, the Daily Herald says two years ago, the state had 16,600 government vehicles, of which 5,150 were permitted to be taken home by state employees, according to an audit by the Illinois Auditor General.
The audit found a state Department on Aging executive and two Illinois Gaming Board members used the cars exclusively for commuting, and three Tollway employees far exceeded the mandate that cars not be used for going to and from work more than 30 percent of the time, the Daily Herald reports.
The Daily Herald reports lawmakers are set to vote this week on greater accountability for the state's vehicle fleet.
