Report: Sandy Alomar Turned Down Overture To Be White Sox Bench Coach Out Of Respect For Robin Ventura
(CBS) Indians first-base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. turned down an overture to become the White Sox's new bench coach out of respect for Chicago manager Robin Ventura, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.
The White Sox fired bench coach Mark Parent after a disappointing 2015 season and have been looking for a replacement since. They expressed interest in Alomar, who didn't want to make the move to Chicago because he didn't want to be viewed as Ventura's replacement.
Ventura has one season left on his contract and has faced criticism after overseeing three consecutive losing seasons.
"I thought about it," Alomar told the Plain Dealer. "But I didn't want to cause a problem.
"I didn't want it to seem like I was coming in to replace Robin in case they stumbled out of the gate. I like and respect Robin too much for that.
"I want no hidden agendas. I'm also very happy with Cleveland. I didn't want anything to be unfair to Robin."
Alomar has interviewed for vacant managerial positions in the past and is viewed by many across the game as a future manager.
