Rooftop Owners Won't Sue Cubs If Team Installs Just 2 Signs
(CBS) -- One of the owners of the rooftop clubs across the street from Wrigley Field said he and the others have agreed not to sue the Chicago Cubs if the team goes back to its original plan for only two new signs in the outfield.
In May, Cubs owner Tom Ricketts declared an impasse in negotiations with rooftop owners over the club's plans to renovate Wrigley Field, announcing an even more ambitious plan for seven outfield signs.
WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports that rooftop owner Jim Lourgos confirmed Thursday afternoon the rooftops won't take the Cubs to court if the team goes back to its original plan for two signs – a video scoreboard in left field and an advertising sign in right field.
In response to questions about the rooftop owners' offer, the Cubs issued a statement.
"We are 100 percent focused on presenting our revised expansion plan to the Commission on Chicago Landmarks," the team said. "Our construction timetable depends on getting the required approvals at that meeting so that must be our priority at this time."
The city has only given approval to the original plan for two outfield signs, and the Cubs would need the approval of the landmarks commission for the five other signs.
Of course, the extra signs would not only bring in even more revenue for the Cubs, they'd block even more of the views from the rooftop clubs. The team's latest expansion proposal goes before the landmarks commission next week.
