Report: NU's Cobb Was Suspended For Academics
(CBS) Northwestern didn't give a reason when head coach Bill Carmody suspended junior guard JerShon Cobb for the entire 2012-13 basketball season, but it appears the reason was academics.
According to a Chicago Tribune report, Cobb was declared ineligible for the fall quarter because of poor grades. That, coupled with a lingering hip injury, resulted in Carmody keeping Cobb out for the entire year.
"He did not take care of business off the court," Carmody told the Tribune. "It definitely was an academic issue."
As for the hip, Carmody said: "He has to get flexibility there. He's a little tight in his hips. Now he's got a full year."
According to the report, Cobb has been meeting with Northwestern's academic support team regularly and has been "pretty religious" about rehabbing his hip.
Even without Cobb, Carmody figures to have a pretty good squad this season as Northwestern gets another crack at reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
