Report: Mel Tucker Hired As Alabama's Secondary Coach
(CBS) Former Bears defensive coordinator Mel Tucker has landed a new job after two much-maligned seasons in Chicago that saw him oversee a defense that set franchise records for futility.
Tucker will now reunite with Nick Saban after being hired as Alabama's new secondary coach, Sports Illustrated reported Monday afternoon. Tucker has previous experience at the collegiate level, having gotten his start in the business as a graduate assistant at Michigan State under Saban and also working for him at LSU. Tucker also made stops at Miami (Ohio) and Ohio State.
As a part of former coach Marc Trestman's staff, Tucker was officially let go by the Bears following the hiring of new coach John Fox, though his exit was imminent following the disastrous 5-11 season in 2014.
In 2013, the Bears set a franchise record for futility by allowing 478 points, which was 29.9 per game, tied for the second-worst scoring defense in the NFL. Chicago also had the league's worst rushing defense. In 2014, Chicago was second-to-last in the league in scoring defense at 27.6 points per game.
