Report: Mel Tucker Drawing Interest From LSU
(CBS) "Black Monday" at Halas Hall fell short of some fans' expectations when the team revealed only head coach Marc Trestman and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer had been fired. In particular, fans were puzzled -- and some angered -- that Mel Tucker wasn't relieved from his duties as the Bears defensive coordinator.
Team president Ted Phillips went on to explain that while all other coaches were kept under contract, the team wouldn't prevent them from pursuing other opportunities.
"We have indicated to all of those folks," Phillips said, "that in the event that the new head coach or general manager wants to interview them, we'd like to give them that opportunity.
"However, we're not going to stand in their way if they have another opportunity elsewhere, then they will go through the proper protocol and those organizations that want to hire or interview one of our coaches or scouts, they will go through the proper protocol and notify me."
Another opportunity may be in reach for Tucker, who has drawn interest from LSU, per a report from The Advocate. Tucker has a history with the LSU program, serving as their defensive backs coach in 2000.
Under Tucker's direction over the past two seasons, the Bears sagged to the bottom of the league. In 2013, the Bears finished last in the league against the run, and in 2014, they finished 31st in points allowed and passing touchdowns allowed.
