Report: Jake Peavy Has Cubs Atop His List Of Future Destinations
(CBS) Free agent-to-be right-hander Jake Peavy has the Cubs atop his wish list of possible destinations this offseason, according to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times.
Peavy is taking the mound for the Giants tonight in Game 6 with a chance to clinch a World Series title against the Royals, but he's expressed a desire to consider all his options in free agency. And while he hasn't talked of his future in detail yet, Peavy is close friends with left-hander Jon Lester, another free agent-to-be who is considered one of the top pitchers on the open market and a possible fit for a Cubs team that is loaded with talented young hitters but in need of an ace and rotational depth.
The two friends going to the same team would appeal to Peavy, and the Cubs seem almost certain to be in the mix.
"Me and Jon are obviously very close," Peavy said, according to the Sun-Times. "If there was ever a fit with both of us on the team, certainly that would interest me. I know what he brings to the table. We have a crazy good friendship, and I know how bad he wants to win, and I know he's not going to go to a situation for however many years he signs (for) to lose.
"You never know what free agency brings. I've certainly talked to Jon Lester because we're buddies. So I have a feel for what he does. And I certainly know that Chicago would interest him and interest me.
"Who doesn't want to play in the city of Chicago?
"When the Cubs do finally win, they may rename the lake."
The 33-year-old Peavy was a combined 7-13 with a 3.73 ERA this season in splitting time between Boston and San Francisco.
The 30-year-old Lester was a combined 16-11 with a 2.46 ERA this season in splitting time between Boston and Oakland.
The Cubs are thought to be in search of two new starting pitchers this offseason.
