Report: Guillen Could Leave White Sox If He Doesn't Feel Wanted
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A published report says Ozzie Guillen might leave after his contract ends in 2012, if he concludes he doesn't feel wanted by the White Sox.
Chicago Sun-Times columnist Joe Cowley reported Monday night that a team source had said Guillen had approached Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf about his status beyond the 2012 season before the Crosstown Classic began this week, and "didn't like what he heard."
Asked to comment about the report, Guillen told the Sun-Times that he might ask about the situation when the season is over, but he doesn't plan to make any demands.
"If they want me back, they can come to me and tell me what they want," Guillen told the Sun-Times in part. "If they don't, well, we move on."
Last year, the newspaper reported that the Florida Marlins had been in talks with Guillen, but were told by the White Sox that they would have to offer a player in exchange. The Marlins instead gave Edwin Rodriguez a one-year deal for 2011, while the Sox picked up the option on Guillen's contract through next year, the Sun-Times reported.
But Rodriguez stepped down this past Sunday, and Jack McKeon, 80, took his place. Now, Cowley reports, the rumors that Guillen could head to the Marlins have been resurrected.
Guillen recently bought a house in Chicago, but he told the newspaper it wasn't because he had made any commitment to stay in the city forever. And when asked about loyalty, his response to the Sun-Times was: "F**k loyalty. Like Juan Uribe says, 'Twenty-one million is more than $20 million.'"
