Report: Grand Jury Set To Reconvene Soon In Patrick Kane Case

(CBS) Grand jury proceedings in New York into rape allegations against Blackhawks star Patrick Kane that were postponed Tuesday without explanation will reconvene "soon," the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday, citing Kane's attorney.

It's expected that the grand jury will reconvene in about two weeks, the Tribune reported. Known to be deliberate in high-profile cases such as this one, the Erie County District Attorney's Office postponed the proceedings Tuesday but didn't explain why. Kane's accuser and a friend of hers who was present on the night of the alleged sexual assault had been scheduled to appear, the Tribune reported.

At least five potential witnesses are expected to appear before the grand jury, the Tribune reported.

The Blackhawks open training camp Sept. 18 at Notre Dame. The team has been silent as to whether Kane will be there with his teammates. Under the collective bargaining agreement, the NHL has the right to suspend players for "conduct that is detrimental to or against the welfare of the league or the game of hockey," but commissioner Gary Bettman indicated the league would let the legal process play out further before making a decision on Kane.

Kane, 26, hasn't been charged in the case as officials with the Hamburg police and the Erie County District Attorney's Office continue to investigate the events surrounding the early morning hours of Aug. 2, when Kane returned to his Hamburg, N.Y., home with a friend, the alleged victim and one of her friends after a night out at the bar.
