Report: Grand Jury Probes Groups Linked To Hendon
CHICAGO (CBS) - Records show a federal grand jury has demanded documents on Illinois state grants, including some that went to groups with ties to a lawmaker running for Chicago mayor.
Some groups listed on the subpoenas are linked to Rickey Hendon, the assistant majority leader in the state Senate.
Hendon has not been accused of wrongdoing.
Hendon announced his candidacy last month, shortly after Mayor Richard M. Daley said he wouldn't be running for re-election. Among his stated goals is reopening Meigs Field, as part of a plan to bring more business to Chicago.
This past weekend, Hendon drew headlines at a get-out-the-vote rally for Gov. Pat Quinn, for his remarks about Republican gubernatorial challenger Bill Brady. He called Brady an "idiotic, racist, sexist, homophobic person."
Brady demanded an apology, but Hendon called his comments "necessary."
