Report: Free Concert Planned During NATO Summit
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Protests and concerns about unrest have dominated talk about the NATO Summit, but the event could also bring some free music and festivity to Chicago.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday that concert organizers are awaiting approval from the city for several free shows at the Petrillo Music Shell in Grant Park. The concert will coincide with the summit and end on May 21.
The concert is called the Barefoot Summit, an homage to the Patti Smith song "Dancin' Barefoot," the Sun-Times reported. It would include folk singers, poetry readings, and a number of food trucks.
Among the confirmed acts are singer-songwriter Tom Morello, local poetry group Louder Than a Bomb, singer-songwriters Ami Saraiya and Anna Soltys, and Rebel Diaz, the newspaper reported. Filmmaker Haskell Wexler, who was behind the film "Medium Cool" about the 1968 Democratic National Convention, is expected to be at the event, the Sun-Times reported.
The Petrillo Band Shell will also be the gathering point for protesters march to McCormick Place on May 20. The city and protesters agreed to the Grant Park site after city officials said demonstrators could not meet in Daley Plaza.
