Report: Drew Peterson Gets Slew Of Love Letters From Women

JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) -- Drew Peterson is on trial for the murder of one wife and suspected in the disappearance of another, but, he apparently still seems like a catch to some women.

As WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, is on trial in Will County on charges that he murdered his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004. He has been in custody since 2009.

Police also suspect Peterson in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy, in 2007.

But now, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reports Peterson is getting truckloads of love letters from young women. His jailers in Joliet have been doling out nine a day, but are holding many more, Sneed reported.

At Peterson's trial Wednesday, an acquaintance, Jeff Pachter, testified that Peterson offered him $25,000 to kill Savio, or find someone else to do it.

Pachter testified that in November 2003, Peterson asked him if he could find someone that could "take care of his third wife." He said Peterson offered $25,000.

Prosecutors said Pachter was unflappable. Defense attorneys said he was unbelievable.

Pachter said Peterson told him if he could find someone to kill Savio for less than $25,000, he could keep the balance.

He said the conversation happened in Peterson's police car, and that Peterson told him "this is something you will take to your grave." He added that Peterson gave him a key phrase – something about cookies – to use on the phone.

But under cross-examination, Pachter said he was not sure whether Peterson was joking, and he never told police about the conversation until Stacy's disappearance three and a half years later.

Defense attorney Joe Lopez ripped Pachter, accusing him of making up the story in order to get his 15 minutes of fame.

"That was ridiculous. The whole story is ridiculous. That's the point," Lopez said outside the courtroom. "You've got a sergeant in a police uniform in a police car, asking somebody to commit a murder?"
