Report: Brewers GM Says Greinke Will Be Traded
(WSCR) Ending any speculation, Brewers general manager Doug Melvin confirmed the team will trade Zack Greinke before the July 31 trade deadline.
Though the decision was difficult, Melvin said the team has no choice but to deal the former Cy Young Award winner.
"I'm very fond of him," Melvin said on Thursday. "He's one of my favorite players I ever had. Really, he's been like a son to me. I enjoyed talking baseball with him. He's very passionate. He follows the game. It's been a great experience having him for a year and a half. There are so many good things about him, it's going to be difficult when we trade him."
Greinke is 9-3 with a 3.44 ERA on this season and, according to Melvin, would be a nice addition to any starting rotation.
"If you're in a pennant race," Melvin said, "this guy is a difference maker. He can go deep into games. He's never been on the DL except for a basketball injury (breaking a rib in February 2011). He's very athletic. And he's great in the clubhouse."
