Report: Blackhawks Assistant GM Takes Job With New Winnipeg Team
CHICAGO (CBS) According to a report, Winnipeg's NHL franchise has found their new general manager, Chicago Blackhawks' assistant GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.
According to the Winnipeg Free Press, Cheveldayoff has accepted the position and an official announcement will be made on Wednesday.
Before joining the Blackhawks for the 2010 season, Cheveldayoff spent 12 years as the GM of the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves, winning four league championships (2002 and 2008 Calder Cups; 1998 and 2000 IHL Turner Cups).
It was rumored that True North, the new owners of the Winnipeg franchise, offered Cheveldayoff the position on Sunday, a day after informing Atlanta GM Rick Dudley that they would not be retaining his services in Winnipeg.
A 16th overall draft pick of the New York Islanders in 1988, Cheveldayoff spent only five seasons as a player, having his career cut short due to injuries.
