Report: Bears Not Rushing To Extend Forte's Contract

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) -- Although Matt Forte had a career year in 2010, the Bears are in no hurry to extend his contract, according to a published report.

Comcast SportsNet's John "Moon" Mullin reported that Forte has had one fantastic year and two adequate ones, and thus, the Bears will not be rushing to do anything to keep him early.

Forte has one year left on his rookie contract.

But a Jan. 31 report by Mullin seemed to indicate that Forte's performance will be a focus next season. Mullin quoted coach Lovie Smith that the Bears are looking at their future and "what Matt Forte will be able to do this coming year."

The Bears signed Forte to a four-year deal as a second-round draft pick before the 2008 season. In the Bears lineup, he replaced Cedric Benson, who was waived after three ineffective, injury-plagued years following his second alcohol-related rest in a month.
