Red Line Trains Rerouted To 'L' Tracks Due To Reports Of Explosive

CHICAGO (CBS) --The Chicago Transit Authority to rerouted Red Line trains out of the subway Friday morning, after someone reported a passenger was carrying an explosive.

The reports turned out to be unfounded, but police arrested one person afterward.

Dispatch reports indicated that a passenger on a Red Line train told CTA personnel that another passenger was carrying an explosive device in an envelope.

Police responded to the scene and a K-9 unit searched the entire train, but nothing suspicious was found.

At least one person, however, was taken away by police, according to dispatch reports.

During the reroute, the trains ran on the elevated Brown-Purple Line, Loop, and Green Line 'L' tracks between the Fullerton and Cermak-Chinatown stops, rather than running through subway under Clybourn Avenue, Division Street and State Street.

Both northbound and southbound trains were affected.

This was the second time the CTA has closed the Red Line subway in the past 12 hours.

Around 1:15 a.m., a train's brakes began smoking at the Roosevelt stop, prompting the CTA to reroute Red Line trains to the elevated tracks for about an hour and a half. Fire crews also responded to the scene.
