Red Cross Helps 28 People From 3 Chicago Fires
CHICAGO (STMW) - The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago assisted 28 people from three Saturday morning fires throughout the city.
The Red Cross provided food, clothing and shoes to 11 people from a fire in the 4800 block of South Wood Street, 10 people from a fire in the 5200 block of South Marshfield Avenue and five people from a blaze in the 1900 block of West 47th Street, according to a Red Cross release.
Shelter was provided to the 15 people from the Marshfield Avenue and 47th Street fires, the release said. Infant supplies were also provided to members of the 47th Street fire and teddy bears to people in the Wood Street fire.
The most serious of the fires was the blaze on Wood Street.
Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said the fire at 4839 S. Wood St. started in a 2 ½-story house about 9:10 a.m. The fire moved trough the first and second floors, but the residents had already escaped by the time firefighters arrived.
The blaze was elevated to a still-and-box alarm, which was canceled about 9:30 a.m.
