Real Contest For Schaumburg Village President Shapes Up
(WBBM) - There's a real race shaping up in Schaumburg. For the first time in more than a decade, someone is mounting an election challenge against the long-time village president.
It's been 15 years since Schaumburg Village President Al Larson had someone run against him. The challenger is a local political activist named Brian Costin.
Costin declared his candidacy for mayor of Schaumburg in January, and according to the Daily Herald, filed his paperwork on Monday for Schaumburg's municipal elections in April.
Costin is described a conservative, friendly to the tea party, and is basing his campaign on rolling back local taxes, including eliminating the village's new property tax.
But Larson says he's worried about maintaining the integrity of services, especially police and fire.
Political observers say Larson may have a real fight, considering a tea party candidate defeated incumbent U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean in the 8th district in the mid-term elections earlier this month.
