Woman Raped, Robbed While Walking In Horner Park
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was robbed and raped late Sunday night in the Horner Park neighborhood.
Police said the 31-year-old woman was walking home from work on Campbell Avenue near Pensacola Avenue around 9:30 p.m. when a man grabbed her from behind. He placed what felt like a gun in her back and announced a robbery.
The woman handed over her money and cell phone, and then the man forced her into an alley and sexually assaulted her, police said.
The man ran away, headed west down the alley, according to police.
The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center to be treated for her injuries.
No one was in custody Monday, police are continuing to search for the man. Area Central detectives were investigating.
CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot is in Horner Park, where the tight-knit community is left shaken Monday evening.
"It's just terrible," said Jennifer Johnston, who lives in the area. "It's just terrible and our hearts go out to her."
Jennifer Johnston talks about the woman who was robbed and sexually assaulted in this Horner Park alley.
"It is a tight-knit community," she said. "The neighbors know each other. I have lived here for over 20 years. It's just really disturbing to think that this happened here. You know, last night."
Detectives spent the morning, in the alley where the assault happened and going door to door in the neighborhood. CBS 2 reached 47th Ward Ald. Ameya Pawar by phone.
"We are in constant contact not only with the commander, with the department and we will make sure that everyone is aware of what is going on," said 47th Ward Ald. Ameya Pawar.
