Rangers TV Broadcaster Takes Indefinite Leave After On-Air Mishap

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers television announcer Dave Barnett says he doesn't expect to return this season after an on-air incident in which he gave a rambling, incoherent description that confused viewers.

Barnett said in a statement issued through the team Monday that he was taking an indefinite leave of absence for medical reasons. He didn't elaborate.

During the eighth inning June 18 in San Diego, Barnett said a runner was on "fifth" base after a "botched robbery." He then mentioned a "henchman" before the broadcast went silent for several seconds.

Barnett told The Dallas Morning News last week that he had no recollection of the incident and was diagnosed with a "complicated" migraine.

Steve Busby will keep Barnett's play-by-play duties. Matt Hicks has taken Busby's place on the radio crew.
