Ramirez Not Using Injury As Excuse For Struggles
CHICAGO (CBS) At 23-28, the Chicago Cubs are in fifth place, 7.5 games back, in the NL Central. The team's had a rash of injuries, sending two starting pitchers and their centerfielder to the disabled list.
Third baseman Aramis Ramirez is battling an injury of his own, although it hasn't put him on the DL, it may be contributing to his recent struggles at the plate, but he won't place the blame on an injury.
"No excuses," Ramirez said. "Nobody around here is 100 percent, and I'm not. But there's a lot of guys in here that are not, so I don't like to make excuses. I just haven't, you know, performed the way I'd like to."
Ramirez has a solid .281 batting average and .342 on-base percentage, both are right around his career averages. But it's run-production, especially as of late, where Ramirez is struggling.
In the month of May, Ramirez has only seven runs batted in, and over the last week has hit for a .125 average (2-for-16).
But on a positive note, Ramirez hit it first home run since April 6, snapping the second-longest homerless streak of his career.
