Rain To Continue, Thunderstorms Possible

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Rain will continue through the midday hours Wednesday, and thunderstorms could be cracking through the area later in the afternoon.

CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says the light to moderate rain that was falling in areas relatively close to the lake will continue until around 4 p.m., when the rain could ratchet up to thunderstorms.

The entire area is under a slight risk of severe weather, although the worst of it is expected south of the Kankakee River.

A warm front is approaching the area, producing some cracks of thunder and flashes of lightning in central Illinois. The rain chance will rev up even more when a subsequent cold front blows through.

As of 11:20 a.m., temperatures were generally mild in the Chicago area, but varied widely depending on proximity to the lake. It was 68 in Peru and 66 in Kankakee, but 61 at Midway International Airport, 59 at O'Hare, 57 in Gary, Ind., and only 49 in Waukegan.

The forecast high for the day is 60, with an overnight low of 50 as rain continues in some spots and skies remain mostly cloudy.

But when the cold front clears, the temperature will drop for everyone as a high-pressure ridge begins hovering over the area. The high for both Thursday and Friday is only 54, for Saturday 50, for Sunday 52, for Monday 53 and for Tuesday 56.
