"It was quite an honor, kind of a nice way to finish up my career," said Lid.
He was presented with the news at a pep rally at the school last week. The educator says the honor has given him new perspective about his life's work.
"These awards that I've gotten involved in , it's helped me to redefine myself as a teacher, to redefine what I do in the classroom and share it with other teachers," he said.
Lid and the four other inductees will be honored May 8 during a reception at the Washington headquarters of the National Education Association. In June they will be in Emporia, Kansas for a recognition banquet and the induction ceremony
The stories of their careers will be on permanent display at The National Teachers Hall of Fame gallery on the Emporia State University campus.
Lid teaches 10th- through 12th-grade Conceptual, Honors and AP Chemistry at Proviso East, where he also is the head coach for varsity baseball and assistant coach for wrestling and golf.
The Class of 2012 was chosen by a national selection committee that met Feb. 16.
