Protesters For, Against Same-Sex Marriage Demonstrate Outside Undecided State Rep's Office
CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (CBS) -- The debate over same sex marriage in Illinois played out today in front of an undecided state representative's office in Chicago Heights. WBBM's Mike Krauser reports.
Both sides of the same-sex marriage issue were outside the office of State Representative Anthony DeLuca in Chicago Heights.
Same Sex Marriage Demonstrations Held Outside State Rep's Office
The Illinois Family Institute, fighting same-sex marriage, but Linda Jernigan on the microphone, who identifies herself as a former lesbian.
"I wouldn't serve a God who couldn't change my desires. If he is able to take alcohol out of your mouth, if he is able to take nicotine out of your mouth, then surely he can take homosexuality, same-sex desires out of your mouth because it is only a behavior. It is not orientation," said Jernigan.
John was holding a sign reading, "Equality for all."
"It may be strange to you, as they say, love is blind. God is love. If God is love, he walks in me when I fall in love with someone else," said John.
Activist Andy Thayer with the Gay Liberation Network says the ball is now in House Speaker Michael Madigan's court.
"The time for the vote is now, enough dilly-dallying. The Democrats claim they are in favor of equal rights. It's time for them to step up to the plate," said Thayer.
Madigan recently said the votes aren't there yet, but it is close.
