Protest Held Outside Ald. Cappelman's Office
CHICAGO (CBS) -- First it was pigeons and then, the homeless. Hundreds of protestors in uptown are angry at the alderman there over what they say are decisions that don't respect his constituents, reports CBS 2's Dana Kozlov.
The uproar in uptown started over a salvation army food truck. It culminated today in a protest, over what some call a misunderstanding and others call being misguided.
A pigeon clad human. People, dressed like condiments. A snack cart.
And all part of the protest outside 46th ward Alderman James Cappelman's Uptown office, because protestors believe Cappelman told the Salvation Army - don't feed the humans.
And to set the record straight, Cappelman and Salvation Army Captain Nancy Powers met to clear the air today.
Asked if this meant the Salvation Army food truck would stay in Uptown, Powers replied, "The food truck and our case workers and all of the social services that we bring."
"This has always been about making sure people who are experiencing homelessness are getting off the streets and in a safe place to live," said Cappleman.
Neither would point fingers - but a misunderstanding it apparently was.
Although many protestors were upset about the perceived food truck slight, many were already unhappy with what they say are Cappelman's disingenuous attempts to help uptown's poor and homeless. Not to mention his efforts to deport the ward's pigeon's.
"His ways are flawed. We can't all fit into the same box. We are all different, we are all unique," said one protester.
That's why many protestors are still angry over what they say are Cappelman's disingenuous attempts to really help the poor and homeless. But Cappelman says his next goal is finding a way to get all social service agencies here in the ward to work together to better help people.
