Prosecutor: Suburban Man Fatally Stabs Dog He Believes Was Possessed
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. (STMW) A northwest suburban man allegedly stabbed his father's sheltie dog to death in a park and told police he did it because he thought the dog was possessed, a Cook County prosecutor said Sunday.
Andrew Maynard, 18, of Elk Grove Village, was ordered held in lieu of $50,000 bail on a charge of animal cruelty by Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr., the Sun-Times reports.
Assistant State's Attorney Oscar Garcia told the judge during a Sunday hearing that Maynard took a knife from his kitchen April 21 and walked the dog — named Frisky — to nearby Audubon Park.
Maynard stabbed the dog twice in the neck, court records allege. Garcia said Maynard then went home and his father later noticed the dog was missing. Maynard made a comment to a witness and took that person to see the dog's body, Garcia said.
Garcia said Maynard — who had allegedly taken a combination of drugs — also told police he killed the dog because he was in "a bad state of mind" and thought the dog was possessed.
Garcia said Maynard's arrest, which occurred Saturday, was delayed because witnesses didn't immediately come forward.
