Kathryn Keeney's niece, Denise Holze, tells the Daily Herald the two were very close.
"It's like she needed Pat to go first and get things ready and settled," Holze told the newspaper. "When Pat was settled, she called her mom home."
Kathryn Keeney spent her whole life in Elgin, most of it helping her husband run the family store, Keeney's Sporting Goods.
After Kathryn Keeney's husband, Earl Keeney, died in 1993, Kathryn Keeney took over for the next 17 years with her daughter Patricia, who died Dec. 27 after a short battle with cancer.
