6 Teens, 1 Adult Hospitalized After Prom Night Crash

CHICAGO (CBS) – Six teenagers and one adult were hospitalized after a prom night crash in Ashburn early Saturday morning.

Chicago police said a 2019 Nissan Rogue was headed eastbound on 79th Street when it struck a 2003 GMC Yukon that was crossing the intersection northbound on Homan Avenue at approximately 12:45 a.m. in the 3400 block of West 79th Street.

Chicago Fire Department officials confirmed the teens, ages 16 to 19, and one adult were transported to local hospitals in serious to critical conditions.

A 51-year-old man, who was driving the 2003 GMC Yukon, is in stable condition.

According to family, some of the teenagers attended Bogan High School's prom earlier that evening. The mother of two teenage victims said both of her sons were not part of the prom group, but they are current and former students at the high school.

She also said her 17-year-old son was released from the hospital with neck, back and leg injuries. She said he is not walking and is using a wheelchair.

Fire officials said the teenagers were driving a rental car.

"The accident happened so fast," said witness Rob Schultz.

Schultz said he saw the car engulfed in flames with the teens in the back seat.

Schultz was able to get one of the passengers out through the window. He said the teen was unconscious.

"As I was dragging him to the curb, the car actually caught on fire," Scultz said.

The cause of this crash is still under investigation.
