Pride Parade Drawing More Spectators -- And More Cops
(CBS) – The Pride Parade on the North Side is expected to draw a million people this Sunday.
City planners are trying to keep it from getting out of control, CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports.
Multiple building inspectors will keep an eye on problematic rooftop partiers.
"Look, I'm not naïve, there is potential for danger here," says 44th Ward Ald. Tom Tunney.
Parade Coordinator Richard Pfieffer says the rules have changed this year. Police say they will issue public drinking tickets that will cost violators $1,000.
John Dalton of D.S. Teguila owns a trio of Boystown hotspots, and he's alerted patrons about the increased police presence.
The Chicago Police Department's post-parade presence is expected to be double compared with prior years.
"The Chicago Police Department is committed to ensuring a safe and successful celebration of Pride Fest this upcoming weekend," the agency said in a written statement. "To ensure the enjoyment of all attendees and with respect to area residents and businesses, there will be zero tolerance for drinking on the public way during festivities, as has been the case at many major events throughout the city. In addition, for their own safety, people should not gather on rooftops which are not designated to host occupants, and should maintain occupancy at or below capacity on all balconies. Our goal is for everyone to enjoy our great city and the celebration of Pride Fest in a safe and responsible manner."
