Alderman Preckwinkle says when you're trying to get out of a hole, the first thing you do is stop digging. And, she says, Cook County may not be able to do without the revenue generated by remaining half-penny increase in the sales tax, at least in the short term.
She cites a Civic Federation analysis that suggests the county's looking at a $285 million budget hole. So, Preckwinkle says that must be dealt with first, then the sales tax.
