PR Executive Convicted Of Raping Woman He Met Online
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The rape conviction of a 40-year-old PR executive in Chicago illustrated the difficulty prosecutors often have in pursuing cases of so-called "acquaintance rape."
Ignacio Carrillo allegedly raped two women he met online, one of whom he allegedly drugged in 2009.
Prosecutors said he slipped the date rape drug into her drink after they met at a restaurant, then – as she gradually became more and more disoriented – took her to a bar, and then a hotel, where he forced her inside, took away her cell phone, shoved her onto a bed, and raped her.
At first, that victim wasn't cooperating, and it appeared Carrillo would be in the clear, until he allegedly attacked another woman in 2011.
The circumstances of the two cases were nearly identical. The second victim told police, after a night out with Carrillo, he pushed her against his Porsche inside a parking garage, and brutally raped her.
She did want to pursue charges, and prosecutors said when the first woman learned of the second attack, she decided to pursue charges, and Carrillo was convicted of that rape.
Prosecutors were allowed to use testimony from both women at the trial for the 2009 case, even while the second case was pending, to provide proof of another crime.
Carrillo faces up to 15 years in prison for his conviction in the 2009 case.
