Portage Police Warning Residents After Woman Bound, Assaulted
PORTAGE, Ind. (CBS) -- Police in Portage, Indiana are warning residents of an apartment building after a woman was bound, assaulted and robbed over the weekend.
The police chief and a top detective went door-to-door at the apartment building at Willowcreek and Lute roads.
"A detective came up and knocked on my door," said building resident Rhonda Rokicki.
"We'll put all the detective investigative aspects toward solving this," said Portage Police Chief Troy Williams.
Authorities say the Sunday morning assault happened after the suspect gained access, bound the woman and sexually assaulted her. She was eventually able to call police.
"As a single woman in this community, I'm terrified," said resident Desiree Badgerow.
"Self-defense and double locks and don't think it can't happen to you. It can happen to anybody," said Shirley Peeler
Chief Williams urges anyone who sees something suspicious to call them.
"That's what we're here for. We'll come check. If it turns out to be nothing, it's nothing," he said.
Police say it appears to be isolated.
