Pompei: Uncertainty At Almost Every Position For Bears
(WSCR) If Phil Emery isn't ready for a wild few months, he better prepare himself quickly.
"There are a lot of moving parts on this team," Dan Pompei of the National Football Post and Chicago Tribune told The Mully and Hanley Show." It might end up not changing a lot, but it might end up changing drastically. There are moving parts at corner back, there are moving parts at safety. There are potential moving parts at linebacker, where, don't forget, Lance Briggs is unhappy with his contract. There are certainly moving parts on the defensive line. Also on the offensive line, where it wasn't good enough last year. ... There is virtually uncertainty at every position on this team, especially given that they don't have the same person in charge who is the final say in all decisions. There's going to be a lot that happens between now and April that determines what happens in the draft."

Fortunately for Emery, the combine is underway where, whether legal or not, a lot of dealing between agents and general managers takes place.
"One of the ways that the combine has grown in value is it has become a convention for the NFL," Pompei said. "Everyone associated with the league is here for seven days in a very small area. There is all of this networking and talking three weeks prior to the start of free agency. So, you have a lot of opportunities to kind of strategize and network with agents to kind of find out where (the free agents) are who interest you. 'Is there a possibility that your client would want to play for my team? If so, what kind of money is he looking at? What kind of interest is there in him?' All of this, of course, is technically tampering and not allowed, but it goes on all over the place."
