Pompei: Let Orton Clear Waivers
(WSCR) While it appears the Bears have some interest in bringing in quarterback Kyle Orton, one Bears expert said the Bears should wait for him to clear waivers before trying to bring him in.
If the Bears claim Orton and are awarded that claim, they are on the hook for the full amount of money remaining on Orton's 2011 contract. If they wait for him to clear waivers, the team can sign Orton to a mutually agreeable contract.
"I don't know that it makes sense to claim him, only because the Bears are 30th in the claiming order," Dan Pompei of The National Football Post and Chicago Tribune told The Mully and Hanley Show. "The only teams behind them are the Packers and the 49ers, and I don't think they have to worry about those two teams claiming Orton. You probably would do better by just signing him after he clears waivers, assuming that there's not going to be a big stampede to sign him, which there could be a few teams interested.
"I think he would want to play here. I think this is a good situation for him. (The Bears) probably have done their homework and know that if he does clear waivers, that they would have a good shot at him."
