Pompei: Bears May Have Shot Themselves In The Foot
(WSCR) The Bears' decision to fire their general manager but keep their head coach may be one that haunts them in the coming months.
In Monday's press conference, Bears president Ted Phillips made it very clear that Jerry Angelo's replacement at the general manager position must be approved by head coach Lovie Smith.
Phillips said, without question, Smith would be the head coach in 2012, regardless of the who the general manager is.
Dan Pompei of the National Football Post and Chicago Tribune thinks that decision will ultimately be costly for the Bears.
"One of the first things that Ted said was this guy has to have chemistry with Lovie," Pompei told The Mully and Hanley Show. "I think this is going to be an issue. This is going to limit your potential candidates. The other thing is, I think it's going to be something that limits you in terms of who you can draw here, because this is kind of an unprecidented time in the NFL. You have four general manager openings, which is very, very unusual. Therefore, you've got competitions for the best candidates. If, the Colts for instance, can offer the guy who you want his choice to make his own head coach, they have an advantage over the Bears. That might be an advantage that costs the Bears their first choice. It may ever cost the Bears their second choice.

"The manner now for which the Bears are left to deal with this is very unusual. You've got a head coach who remains, and he's going to help hire his boss, who then is going to determine whether or not the coach is worth keeping."
