Pompei: Bears' Draft Should Focus On Volume

With the NFL Draft just over a month away, the Chicago Bears' draft board and strategy are probably still undergoing some fine-tuning.

In the past, the Bears have traded down in order to add additional picks, and the last two years have been without a first round pick. But with glaring needs on the offensive and defensive lines could the Bears be moving from the 29th overall pick?

"Well I think that's possible, I think it depends on how the first round plays out," Dan Pompei, of the Chicago Tribune, said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "There's a chance that all of the top offensive tackles will be off of the board. There's a chance that there won't be an interior blocker who's worth taking, [still] on the board at 29. There's a chance that all the top pass rushers are gone. If that's the case, absolutely, move down."

But what about the idea of trading up to assure that the Bears can land one of the top offensive or defensive line prospects? Pompei thinks that strategy works agaisnt what the Bears' current situation demands.

"You're in a case right now where you're talking about a team that has had a deficit of high round draft picks for the last two years," Pompei said. "If you're subtracting again from you're high round picks this year, which you would have to do to move up...that's a steep price to pay for a team that really needs a lot of good young players. So you have to think hard about that, and you have to really make sure that the ends justify the means. Because they need a volume of players, not just one great player."
