Pompei: Bears Can Do More With Conte
(WSCR) When the Bears announced Major Wright and Chris Conte would be the new starting safeties, few knew how the tandem would handle their promotion.
Dan Pompei of The National Football Post and the Chicago Tribune said the duo has come together nicely, allowing the Bears to mix up their defensive coverages.
"Maybe they feel like now that they have a safety like Conte in the back end who can cover a lot of ground and has a lot of range, maybe you're more comfortable not in that Cover-2 look all the time," Pompei told The Mully and Hanley Show. "Maybe you're more comfortable bringing a guy down into the box and having Conte back there saying, 'OK, you can go sideline to sideline, or you can move up and back a little bit better, you do this.' Part of that, I think, is personnel as well as the ability to change things from a coaching perspective."
