Police Warn Of Robberies Along Lakefront In Kenwood
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police were warning people who use the Lakefront Trail in the Kenwood neighborhood to be cautious, after a string of robberies along the path.
CBS 2's Courtney Gousman reports a community alert was issued Thursday night, warning people who frequent the lakefront to be aware of recent robberies along the path, between 43rd and 47th streets.
Between July 5 and July 19, there were three robberies during the early morning or late night hours, according to police.
A group of men were involved in each robbery, approaching people on the Lakefront Trail, displaying weapons or attacking their victims, and stealing their property.
Descriptions of the attackers vary, and the size of the group was anywhere from two to 13 young men.
Police reminded residents to always be aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
"You kind of always know that in the back of your mind, but when there have actually been incidents – and recent ones – it makes you feel much more like that's a very distinct possibility, and not just a theoretical one," jogger Daisy Delogu said Friday morning. "I don't carry an iPhone with me, or any money, but still I wouldn't want to be approached by anybody."
Adam Danolini said he runs at least six miles in the morning seven days a week, but he's never run into any trouble.
"I've never had any problems, never seen anything funny. Everything always seems really calm and peaceful here, so that's why it's so surprising," he said.
Police said, if anyone is confronted by a robber, they should stay calm, and remember any unique physical characteristics – such as scars, tattoos, acne, or other details that can help identify a suspect. Victims should never pursue a fleeing attacker, but should call 9111 and stay on the scene, if possible, to talk to police.
