Police Warn Of Bogus Computer Help Calls
CHICAGO (CBS) -- If you get an unsolicited call offering help with your computer, hang up.
Computer Help Scam
That's the advice from one suburban police department, WBBM's Steve Miller reports.
Police in St. Charles say it's happened several times over the last week: A resident will get a call from someone who says he--or she--works for Microsoft and can "help fix a problem" with their computer.
Police say it's not a computer repairman on the other end of the line.
It's a con man just looking for access to personal information and, of course, money.
St. Charles Police say residents should never give out credit card information or take any help from these unsolicited callers.
Just hang up.
St. Charles Police say the calls are coming from men and women.
The callers "have a strong foreign accent," police said.
