Police Still Questioning Person Of Interest In Gary Cop's Murder
GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- Indiana investigators continue to question a person of interest in the fatal shooting of a veteran Gary Police officer, but still no charges.
Officer Jeff Westerfield was shot while sitting in his squad car early Sunday morning near 27th and Van Buren in Gary.
CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports mourning bunting is now draped across the top of the Gary Public Safety Facility in honor of officer Westerfield. A squad car also has a black cloth covering its windshield as the department mourns the loss of one of their one.
Westerfield's lifeless body was found in his squad car around 5:45 Sunday morning. He had been shot to death while responding to a call. Sources say his last communication was asking for a description of the suspect.
Several law enforcement agencies assisted in a massive manhunt for his killer, and around 2:45 Sunday afternoon three men were arrested after police raided a home in the 2600-block of Jackson. Sources say the suspected shooter was taken to the hospital in this ambulance, suffering from a gunshot wound not related to the raid.
Monday, officers and investigators returned to the scene of Westerfield's murder. Sources say they were looking for the murder weapon. They also reviewed surveillance video from this church, hoping it caught the killer leaving the area, but it did not.
Westerfield's fiance says it's frustrating not having more answers about why he was killed. She also says at a time when she should be planning their wedding which would have been August 24, she's no working on funeral arrangements.
As for the three suspects arrested Sunday, police are not identifying them at this time, but sources say the suspected shooter has a criminal history including battery to a law enforcement officer.
