Police-Involved Shooting Near Mount Greenwood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A police officer responding to drag racing in Alsip shot a driver who hit two squad cars as he fled police overnight Wednesday. Another man was also injured in the shooting.

An Alsip police officer opened fire at about 2:10 a.m. near an apartment building near Marist High School.

Police said two Alsip police officers saw a silver Dodge Challenger and a black Cadillac drag racing in the David Estates neighborhood of Alsip. The officers followed the Cadillac over the Chicago border to the 4000 block of West 115th Street and commanded the vehicle's two occupants to raise their hands.

The driver disobeyed the officers' orders, drove the Cadillac towards one of the officers and struck the two police cruisers, prompting one officer to open fire.

"We need help--we need help--shots fired," an officer screams into a police radio.

A 33-year-old man and another man, 25, were also shot and were hospitalized Wednesday morning.

The two officers on the scene when the shooting occurred were also hospitalized as part of police protocols. They are both on administrative leave according to protocol, police said.

Several police departments responded to the incident, including Alsip, Chicago, Merrionette Park and Oak Lawn.

Marist High School opened late today, but police were still on the scene when they arrived shortly after 8 a.m.

Brence Jackson lives at the apartment complex where the shooting happened and saw the damage from his window.

Brence Jackson lives in the Mt. Greenwood apartment complex where an Alsip police officer shot the driver of a fleeing vehicle Wednesday morning.

"When I came out this morning to get breakfast for my children I did see that. It looked like a war zone," Jackson said. You move away from those neighborhoods so you don't see that, but as you can see it tends to follow you everywhere om Chicago."
