Police Shoot, Wound DUI Suspect After Chase

The incident began about 15 minutes earlier, when police said they found a suspect passed out with a gun by his side in the 700 block of South Clark Street downtown.

The officers backed off and called for backup. The suspect woke up and drove away, leading police on a chase that went onto several downtown streets and up and down the Eisenhower.

Officers temporarily lost sight of the vehicle, but picked up the chase again after other officers spotted the vehicle and finally caught the driver when he blew a tire.

Chicago Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the suspect threatened the officers when the chase ended.

"The police are approaching the car, the offender picked the weapon up and is raising the weapon. At that point, an officer fires a shot at the offender, strikes him in the arm," Camden said.

The suspect was hit in the elbow, and his injures are not life-threatening, Camden said.

The man's gun was recovered, he said.

No officers were hurt during the chase or arrest.
