"A bad guy pulls a gun out of his pocket – a silver handgun. The officer now is telling him, 'Drop the gun.' The bad guy points the gun at the officer. The officer opens fire. The bad guy gets hit, goes down," Chicago Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said. "Now, the bad guy is shooting at the officer."
The other officer responded by shooting the suspect a second time.
The suspect, 17, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with several gunshot wounds, Camden said. His condition was not known.
No officers were wounded.
Officers shot another gunman in a separate incident just after 3 a.m. Tuesday near 74th and State streets.
The suspect was pronounced dead following the shooting. No officers were wounded, authorities said.
These incidents came barely 24 hours after another shooting just west of the Altgeld Gardens public housing development on the Far South Side.
Two Calumet District officers spotted a man standing against a fence around 8:50 p.m. Sunday in the 13100 block of South Langley Avenue, the Sun-Times Media Wire reported. The man began walking away from the officers, went out of sight, and raised a TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun being raised and lowered the air, the wire reported.
An officer shot the man in the foot.
Two other police-involved shootings also happened in about the past 10 days, and Camden is responding to Mayor Rahm Emanuel's claim to NBC's "Meet the Press," that the crime rate in Chicago is down.
"The virus, unfortunately, continues to escalate. I'm not sure what numbers the mayor is looking at, or how he's trying to spin it, but poor smoke and mirrors," Camden said.
