Officers Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Woman In North Center: Police

(CBS) -- Chicago police fatally shot Friday evening a knife-wielding woman at a North Center bus stop after she acted in a threatening manner, authorities say.

The incident occurred at Irving Park Road and Western Avenue around 5:45 p.m.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified her as 55-year-old Michelle Robey. She lived in the Hollywood Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. An autopsy found she died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen and her death was ruled a homicide.

Officers responding to a 911 call from a CVS at that intersection were directed by employees to the Western Avenue bus stop, where they found a woman with a knife, Area North Deputy Chief Al Nagode told reporters. CVS employees said she was yelling and damaging property.

Witness Darryl Dixon tells CBS 2: "I heard her say, 'I have a knife, I will cut you.'"

Responding officers said they asked her to drop the knife multiple times. They then tried to subdue the woman, twice, with a Taser stun gun before firing on her, Nagode said. The woman was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Independent Police Review Authority will investigate the police-involved shooting. The officers in the incident will be placed on customary 30-day administrative leave, a police spokesperson said.
