Police Shoot, Kill Man In Englewood
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police shot and killed a man in the Englewood neighborhood overnight, after he allegedly ran from a traffic stop and pointed a gun at officers.
The chain of events began at 12:26 a.m. Wednesday, when Mobile Strike Force officers were on "aggressive patrol" in the 6900 block of South Halsted Street, police said. The area is known for drug and gang activity, police said.
Officers pulled over a car on the block, but the driver got out and began to run away. When officers chased the man, he pointed a weapon at them, police said.
One officer fired back, and the suspect was killed, police said.
The still-unidentified man was shot in the face and was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:30 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He appeared to be in his 30s,
Two guns were recovered at the scene, according to the statement. No other civilians and no police officers were hurt.
Wentworth Area police detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority -- which investigates all police-involved shootings -- are investigating.
