(CBS) -- Chicago police shot a man who crashed into several parked cars in Wicker Park, then tried to run over officers who had pulled him over.
CBS 2's Marissa Bailey reports, around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to calls about a traffic accident in the 1500 block of North Hoyne Avenue.
Police said a man in his 20s had drove a black SUV into several parked cars, and was knocking over anything in his path.
Eyewitness Clifford Meece Jr. said "apparently some car had come along and, like a pinball machine, bouncing off of the cars. He got my car. He got my dad's car. Got another three or four more cars just on our block."
When police pulled the man over officers tried to pepper spray him, but he covered his face with a shirt, and refused to get out of his vehicle.
At one point, he threw the vehicle in reverse, and ran over several signs and garbage cans. The driver then accelerated forward, aiming his SUV at police and a crowd of bystanders. An officer, in fear of his safety and the safety of the bystanders, shot the driver.
"I heard boom, boom, boom," Clifford Meece Sr. said. "I come running out, and the guy across the street said they got him, and they shot at him. They shot him, but I guess he's alive, and they took him into custody."
The man was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in good condition, with a gunshot wound to the leg. No one else was injured.
No charges had been filed as of late Wednesday morning.
